This is such a fun time of year in first grade.  Every one is reading and learning new things!  We are writing about books and if we enjoyed them!  Some of us are even 'blogging' on Sophia now!  I am so impressed with this group and how far they have come!  Today, we read about insects in science.  We love reading nonfiction books!  This afternoon we had Daily 5!  It was a lot of fun writing about different books that we read!!!  What a great day!  I can't wait to see you all tomorrow!

Happy May Day everyone!  We had a great day, even though this weather is so goofy!  We started with math centers where Mrs. Young, Collin's mom came and helped out with our word problems!  Thank you so much for coming and spending your day off from teaching third grade with our first grade class!  After that, we made May Day baskets!  The kids were so creative and worked really hard on their baskets.  Then, we read Miss C's favorite book Strega Nona!  We all rated it five stars!  Then we ended our day with the Daily 5!  What a great day!  I can't wait to see you all tomorrow!!

Happy May! We had a busy morning working on our language arts lesson 27 weekly tests. The boys and girls did a wonderful job with their robust words and comprehension questions this week! In math our daily objective was to solve 2-digit addition and subtraction problems, and explain the method the boys and girls used to solve them. They worked with a partner using white boards to practice their subtraction. We also watched a BrainPopJR movie, showing us what is happening when you regroup.  We took a brain break on a cool website called 'gonoodle.' The boys and girls had a blast getting their 'wiggles' out to fun songs!

Happy May Day!!  Today we had Daily 5.  We got to finishing stamping out our spelling words at the word work center and we wrote a book review for our writing.  After Daily 5,  we had library.  In library we watched a movie about weather. Then we went to lunch and recess.  We had computer this afternoon.  In computer class we went on a website to look at cartoons, people, places, and animals.  After computer we celebrated May Day!  We made May Day baskets and put flowers in them.  They turned out very cute!  Math today was working on mixed story problems.  Sometimes we added and subtracted in the same problem. WOW!   I hope I see you all tomorrow!  Happy Birthday yesterday, Finn!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!  (Happy 5th of May) In reading this week, we are working on the long e sound.  We are practicing spelling it with ie and y.  We read a story called "Patty's Family Sketches" and we worked on telling if a verb was in the now or in the past.  We were able to show this with a flashcard!  In music this morning we practiced our songs for the spring concert!  After lunch and recess we went to PE.  In PE we played a whole bunch of tag games.  In science,  we were able to see that four of our chrysalises turned into beautiful butterflies over the weekend!!  We drew the butterfly habitat and a butterfly up close into our science journals.  In math, we worked on a worksheet with our table.  We were practicing doing mixed operation story problems.  We also had to come up with our own story problem with our table about a camping trip.  Our day like normal with groups!  Bye parents!

It was a good day!!  For reading today we read the story called "At the Crayon Factory".  We learned all about how to make crayons.  We did a fun whiteboard activity where the first person had to write the spelling word and then as a group we had to think of a sentence.  We built the sentence word by word.  The best part was that each group did this with no talking!  This afternoon we had music and PE.  In science we journaled about our butterflies and what it was like holding a darkling beetle.  In math we talked about story problems that had extra information.  We had to figure out what the extra information or irrelevant info was and solve the problem!  This was fun!  See you Wednesday!

It has been a great week! Yesterday I was gone for a track meet and I recieved a fabulous sub report! Way to go!   We are working on lesson 28 of language arts. We are focusing on the -ought and -all word endings. We are learning about helping verbs. In writing, we are practicing writing book reports. They are doing a great job with this!   In science, we started a unit on Balance and Motion. Today, the boys and girls got paper crayfish and experimented with balancing them on their fingers. We then learned the vocab stable, balance, and counter balance. The students received two clothespins and used those to help them balance the crayfish.    We ended the day with Computer and PE!   Homework tonight!

Today was a pretty good day!  We had Daily 5.  In word work, we wrote our spelling words with red hot vowels.  If we finished, we played the silly sentences puzzle game.  At the writing station, we did our final copy of our how to paragraphs. (How to brush your teeth, how to wash your hands, etc.).  We had library and computer for our specialists.  We finished up the last part of our Mother's Day gifts.  These will be coming home with your child today!  Math today was the story problem festival!!  As a group, we solved our classmates story problems.  We had to make sure we checked our answers with everyone at our table before we could do the next problem.  I hope I see all of your super faces tomorrow!

Happy Friday!   Today in language arts we reviewed the -all and -ought endings. We worked with helping verbs, identifying them in sentences and creating sentences of our own. Then we finished up our daily 5 centers!   We had a geologist come in today to talk to us about rocks. This tied into our theme story called, "Let's Go Rock Collecting." The boys and girls enjoyed learning about the rock cycle as well as seeing a variety of rocks.   We had indoor recess and then music. We then did a science experiment on stability. The boys and girls received an arch and a triangle. They taped a Popsicle stick to their desks, and tried to balance their objects on the stick. They then journaled about their findings.    We had computer, and then cashed in our turtle time!
